Q: What’s your background?
A: I’m a born and bred Wellingtonian. Graduated from Victoria with a BCA and commenced my career with Ernst & Young. Towards the end of my time there I realised that I had a real bent for technology-enabled business transformation so on arrival in London in the mid-90s this became my focus. This became my first fintech experience implementing a global fund management platform provided by Fidelity to Invesco – two of the largest fund managers in the world. Since moving to London I’ve spent 15 of the last 20 years there working in the fintech sector – for incumbents, fintech eco-system enablers and latterly for fintech startups. I’ve returned back to NZ with a young family and looking to jump-start the NZ fintech eco-system with an additional focus on global growth.
Q: Why are you passionate about startups?
A: In general – helping people turn their concepts/ideas into reality and a successful business. Specifically with fintech startups is the additional challenge of striking the balance between competing, cooperating and disrupting with the existing industry players.
Q: What drew you to the Kiwibank FinTech Accelerator?
A: I jumped at the opportunity to be involved with NZ’s first dedicated fintech accelerator programme. Personally, I see it as a fantastic catalyst to increase the visibility of fintech in New Zealand.
Q: What’s your vision for the programme?
A: I’m hoping to help participants recognise that New Zealand fintechs need to look beyond the current enablers in the NZ/Australian market. No NZ banks have released APIs, so NZ startups need to look to the UK and other markets to be able to truly innovate.
Q: What are you most excited about heading into the programme?
A: The great mix of fintechs we have in the cohort – from insurtech, wealthtech to regtech and SMB financial education.
