The Collect team is passionate about delivering the world’s best-integrated marketing tools for retailers. The startup is based in Wellington, but are taking on the world and their product is already being used in thousands of stores in 60+ countries. Collect is an elegant and powerful marketing tool for small to medium retail businesses. The power comes from ‘world-class integrations, data, and automation that makes marketing more targeted, timely, easier and measurable’.

The team behind Collect are made up of two brothers Matt and Brady Thomas & Brent Spice. The brothers went through Creative HQ’s incubation programme 5 years ago in 2012. We caught up with the lads recently to find out what they’ve been up to.

What were the top things you took away from the programme?
  • Know your value proposition

Basically, what benefit do you provide, for who, and how do you do it better than the alternative options? Be able to answer this for your business before taking your next steps.

  • Focus on providing value and the rest will follow

Ask yourself this question: what real value do you provide your customer? People place importance on different things to different extents so having researched and validated the value you provide to your customer will help you go far.

  • Customer first, product second

Really get to know your customer. Know the problem you’re trying to solve for your customer before spending time building a product. Create a minimum viable product to test on your customer and iterate from there.

Why did you choose to focus your business on the hospitality and retail operators?

Retail shopping is a $22trillion dollar market. 98.6% of it is small to medium enterprises (SME). All the good marketing tools are reserved only for enterprise companies. We aim to bring the enterprise-grade performance marketing to SME at a fraction of the cost.

Collect is partially a family owned company, is there any advantages in doing business with family?

Collect was started with three brothers! Two twins and one from another mother. Business culture and working dynamics are defined first by the founders and working alongside family means trust is there from day one. In our team, everyone is always looking out for each other’s best interests.

It’s 2017 and Collect has grown since 2012, you’ve expanded to the U.S, you now have 15 employees, your services are in over 60 countries and you have 4,000,000+ consumers – how do you lead your evolving company through changes?

In short, we lead with these three things top of mind:

  • Building a strong team
